Unfortunately, the Yankees never called the 36 year old outfielder.

The Detroit Tigers are prepared to offer Johnny Damon $14MM over two years. This would make the Tigers the favorite in signing Damon, but that could change at any time.

Don’t hold your breath for a Damon signing. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets that nothing is imminent with the Tigers.

If the Tigers get Johnny Damon, it would likely solve the Tigers’ lack of left-handed bats in the lineup.

James Schmehl of MLive writes: Unlike former Tigers left-handed All-Star Curtis Granderson, Damon doesn’t have to be pulled from the lineup against left-handed pitchers. He’s an equal opportunist, hitting .291 against righties and .283 against lefties in his 13-year career. If he doesn’t make a start, it’s because he’s 36 years old — not because of a pitching matchup.

Damon’s presence could also result in one of three things for Raburn. Raburn could transition into a full-time utility player, making scheduled starts at third, first, left and center field. He could also split time at DH with Guillen and, occasionally, Magglio Ordonez. Or, he could platoon in center with Thomas. The latter would likely result in rookie Austin Jackson not making the 25-man roster.

Of course, if Jackson is sent to Triple-A Toledo to start the season, Damon would likely hit leadoff with second baseman Scott Sizemore batting No. 2.

I think the Tigers are putting too much into a 36 year old left fielder with no arm and at the end of his rope.

Saunders is a bargain if you look at his numbers over the last two years. Joe Saunders was 16-7 with a 4.60 ERA last year and has a 33-14 record in the last two seasons. This is a great bargain at $3.7 million for a young 28 year old with good numbers and on a good team.

In addition to his base salary, he can earn $50,000 in performance bonuses – $25,000 each for 180 and 200 innings—and award bonuses.

The Anaheim Angels made the right move in resigning Saunders in 2010. This resigning will make them a better team and one that will compete with the Mariners.

Johnny Damon is still looking for a job, but has his price gone down?

The New York Yankees and free agent outfielder Randy Winn agreed Wednesday to a $2 million, one-year contract.

Randy Winn hit .262 with two homers and 51 RBIs for the San Francisco Giants last year. I know this sounds at best mediocre, but let’s look at some other numbers.

Winn has averaged 153 games played over the last three years. His batting average over that time is .300, .306 and .262. He has averaged 18 stolen bases in his last three years and strikes out 1 in 5.7 at bats. His RBI and Runs scored are not bad, 2009 (RBI: 51, Runs: 65). Winn has a life time batting average of .286. He is solid on defense and has only committed 3 errors in the last three years.

I think the Yankees made the right move signing the 35 year old for one year.

Yankee fans can now say goodbye to Johnny Damon for good.

I think this is hog wash to think at 36 and a World Series Championship that Damon would even remotely think about retirement.

Damon has a couple of options, but not in the area of $13 million per year. He could crawl back to the Yankees with his tail between his legs and take an offer far less than his mega agent is looking to get. His second option, retire, but that would be nonsense for a player with his above average offensive contribution.

Damon turns 36 next season but is coming off his best .OPS in years, not to mention he hit .364 with six runs scored and three stolen bases (two at one time!) in the World Series against the Phillies. What will Johnny Damon do? If I am a betting man, and I am, I would think Johnny Damon will tell Boras to take a walk and resign with the Yankees for $5 to $6 million for one year.

The Yankees have said they only have $2 million to spend, but you know the Yankees will find a way to sign Damon. If the Yankees offer Damon $6 million for one year which is still a great bargain, Damon will sign.

What do you think Johnny Damon will do?

The Braves are interested in Johnny Damon and they can afford to sign him, but it would only be for a one or two year deal. The deal would have to be in the range of $7-8 mill per season if it’s a two-year deal. This is far off from what Scott Boras wanted $13 million per for 4 years.

The Yankees can resign Damon by offering more than the Braves’, but I am not sure if the Yankees are compelled to put up $7-8 mill per year and may only offer $6 mill for one year with maybe an option for a second year.

Yankee fans want Damon back, but they unfortunately don’t make the decisions for the front office. Cashman has said “I will continue to look at any remaining piece, but it won’t be a big piece. Any speculation about some high-end player who has big ability and dollars attached on a large scale would be inappropriate.”

Damon can still hit!

His overall numbers were impressive in 2009: Damon hit .282 (six points off his career average) with a .365 OBP (10 points above his career mark), 36 doubles (his most since a career-high 42 in 2000) and 82 RBI (his most since a career-high 94 in 2004 with Boston).

He scored more than 100 runs (107) for the 10th time in 12 seasons which is a pretty good feat. He struck out fewer than 100 times to continue his streak of never reaching triple figures in whiffs in 15 seasons in the majors.

The Yankees were going to sign at least Damon or Matsui and not both, but Matsui has already signed with the Angels and it doesn’t look like Damon will be in pinstripes in 2010. Too bad!
