Papelbon or Rivera Who is Better?

Jonathan Papelbon will be paid $9.35 million for one year and will surpass Mariano Rivera’s salary of $7.25 million on his current contract. If you compare their 2009 statistics and salary, Mariano is by far the better closer and he also helped the Yankees win the World Series.

Papelbon had a 1.85 ERA with 38 saves in 41 opportunities and a 1-1 record last year, but was awful in the playoffs. In the final game of a three game series against the Los Angeles Angels, Papelbon gave up three runs in the ninth inning.

Mariano Rivera 2009 Stats

Saves: 44
ERA: 1.76

Post Season
Saves: 5
ERA: 0.74

Papelbon 2009 Stats

Saves: 38
ERA: 1.85

Post Season
Saves: 0
ERA: 13.50

You can’t argue with the numbers. Let’s face it, Theo paid too much!

This isn’t even close. Let Pappel-Bum put up those kind of numbers for another ten years and then we can talk. Meanwhile he’s only another loud mouth closer just a few steps away from John Rocker.

When it comes to professionalism, Mo is also the clear winner. Plus he’s a better fielder. Nuff said.

    Mike,

I agree with you. The money he is getting is ridiculous compared to Mariano.
