Mike Lowell the Castaway

Mike LowellPoor Mike Lowell is now a castaway due to injuries and age. If his thumb had not been an issue, he would still be a valuable and serviceable player. I am sure the Boston Red Sox are thinking about insurance in case Ortiz has the same start he did last year. Mike Lowell isn’t going anywhere at least for now or until May in my opinion.

The Red Sox went and bought a starting 3B for $9M a year with the intention of playing him and not Mike Lowell. Why would they platoon a 36 year old after paying that much money for a younger player in Beltre? They will not!

Lowell isn’t happy as a part time player which he has stated openly just this past week. I also think Theo Epstein is not pleased with Lowell after he gave an interview where he threw the Red Sox medical staff under the bus on how they handled his thumb injury.

Unless Ortiz, Youkilis or Beltre go down with season ending injuries, Lowell will be traded or released. Lowell’s good against lefties and Ortiz is not. If Lowell can get past the fact of being a part time player, the Red Sox will have more depth and insurance, but Lowell wants more unfortunately.

What do you think the outcome will be with Lowell?
